SPRINGS

Springs are the main operation and function of your door. Without springs your door wouldn't budge or move. There are typically two different types of springs that are used in todays doors. You have a torsion spring which consists of a tube with cones on each end and a extension spring which has a pulley system. Torsion springs consists of a right and a left one in most cases. Your one car, one spring set up garage door normally comes with only one spring, which sizes consist of a 8'x7', 8'x8', 9'x7' and a 9'x8' standard size door. Then your two car, two spring set up consists of a 16'x7', 16'x8', 18'x7' and a 18'x8' standard door. In some cases there may be a 20'x7' or 20'x8' garage door which is special ordered.

***ALL SPRINGS SYSTEMS SHOULD BE HANDLED AND REPLACED BY A PROFESSIONAL GARAGE DOOR TECHNICIAN. THESE SPRINGS HOLD A LOT OF TENSION AND CAN INJURE ANYONE WHO TRIES TO REPLACE OR HANDLE A LOADED SPRING.

Statistics for 2010, released by the Consumer Product Safety Commission via the NEISS library, estimate there were 20,809 injures in the garage in the United States for the year. That is a slight increase from 20,382 similar injuries in 2009.

The numbers are a compilation of a sampling of hospitals and reports from throughout the United States and cover two categories of injuries related to the garage door.
